Candidate for External Vice President

External vice presidential candidate Stanley Yen said he wants
to change the direction of UCLA’s student government.

"State and national issues are important, but we need to give
something back to the students," said Yen, a United Students
member.

Yen wants students to directly benefit from the External Vice
President’s office and plans to make financial aid more accessible
through the Scholarship Resource Center.

"Unfortunately, it’s impossible to roll back fees 15 percent
because there’s not enough money in the state budget to do so," Yen
said. "But what we can do is expand financial aid and make it
easier to obtain through informational programs about all of the
scholarships available."

Although he plans to work with both the University of California
Student Association and the United States Student Association, he
would like to make the external vice president’s role in the
council more balanced.

"I don’t think the council should focus on two or three main
issues, such as affirmative action," Yen said. "I think we should
try to focus on all of them."

Yen is currently the council’s Financial Supports Commissioner
and was chief of staff of that office last year. He also served on
Hall Government in Sproul Hall for two years.

"I have had a lot of experience working with financial aid and
am familiar with how the process works," Yen said. "I plan to do
things that will affect the entire campus."
