The UCLA track and field program took its first major step
toward national titles on Sunday with an outstanding showing at the
Sun Angel Invitational in Tempe.

On the women’s side, senior Dawn Dumble who has already
established the UCLA indoor record in the shotput also
captured the school discus record with a throw of 190 feet, 10
inches.

The throw was a two-and-a-half foot improvement over her
previous best, and an eight inch improvement over the former
record.

Dumble also won the shotput with a throw of 57-10 1/2, just
edging out teammate Valeyta Althouse, who threw 57-8 1/2. UCLA’s
Nada Kawar finished fourth with a mark of 50-0 1/2.

For the men, UCLA’s John Godina established a new personal best
in the shotput with a throw of 67-2 1/2, which topped all other
competitors by nearly six feet. Teammates Mark Parlin and Jonathan
Ogden finished third and fourth with throws of 59-9 1/2 and 58-6
1/2, respectively.

Javelin thrower Greg Johnson also had outstanding showing in
Tempe, leading all collegians with a mark of 247-9, his best effort
since the 1993 Pac-10 Championships and the second-best mark in
UCLA history.

Other winners from the Sun Angel Invitational included UCLA’s
Karen Hecox in the women’s 1,500 meters (4:23.30) and Scott Slover
in the pole vault (16-10 3/4).

UCLA freshman Suzy Powell finished third in the discus (172-10)
and fourth in the javelin (161-3), while UCLA’s Avery Anderson
finished fifth in the high jump (6-10 3/4) and sixth in the 110m
high hurdles (14.24). Bruin junior Thomas Ganda finished third in
the long jump (24-1 1/2).
