Bad weather puts a damper on m. tennis

The No. 4 UCLA men’s tennis team entered the Pacific Court
Doubles tournament at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in hopes
of practicing its doubles game, however, the Bruins were only able
to play one full day of tennis before they were rained out and
forced to go home.
UCLA entered the doubles teams of Robert Janecek-Eric Lin, Eric
Taino-Justin Gimelstob and Heath Montgomery-Matt Breen. Bruin Loren
Peters also played in the tournament with Ted Williams, a former
Arizona player.
"You want to keep the guys sharp, you don’t want them to be too
relaxed out there," Martin said. "When they walk off the court they
can head to the beach or be a little independent."
The Bruins, however, found that it was not only the weather that
put a damper on their weekend expectations. Everyone had a bye for
the first match except for Montgomery and Breen who beat the
University of Pennsylvania’s Brian O’Grady and Marc Sisicaro 6-1,
6-0. Breen and Montgomery won their next match but lost in three
sets to Stanford’s Ricky Becker and Jim Thomas 6-7, 7-5, 6-3.
The Bruins’ No. 1 doubles team, Janecek and Lin, did a little
better, making it to the quarter finals. Their loss came to USC’s
Lukas Hovorka and Adam Peterson in three sets 3-6, 7-6, 6-3.
Both the tandems of Taino- Gimelstob and Peters-Williams lost
their first match and entered the consolation bracket. Taino and
Gimelstob made it to the semi-finals, where they were scheduled to
play Scott Kintz and Trent Miller at 9:00 am Sunday.
