Society of Professional Journalists names Daily Bruin third-best newspaper in its region

The Daily Bruin was named the best college news website and third-best newspaper in the region by the Society of Professional Journalists.

At Saturday’s SPJ awards luncheon, The Bruin garnered awards in 13 categories in Region 11, which includes colleges from California, Arizona, Nevada, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Below is a complete list of The Bruin’s awards:

First place:
Website
Editorial writing (Daily Bruin editorial board)
Feature writing (for Devin Kelly’s Back from Libya)
Sports column writing (Ryan Eshoff)
Radio sports reporting (for Gabriel Basayne’s Men’s basketball team reflects on replacing Tyler Honeycutt, Malcolm Lee)
Television feature photography (for Day and night, Santa Monica pier lights up lives of visitors)

Second place:
Radio newscast (Radio staff)
Photo illustration (for Isaac Arjonilla’s “Battle for Pride”)
Radio in-depth reporting (for Sarah Rogozen’s Undiagnosed baby in Mattel Children’s Hospital’s intensive care supported by donations from Star Wars enthusiasts)
Television sports photography (for Rei Estrada’s Inside the mind of a fighter)

Third place:
All-around newspaper
Non-fiction magazine article (for James Barragan’s “Los Angeles River Revival”)
Breaking news reporting (for Kate Parkinson-Morgan’s Viral YouTube video called ‘repugnant’ by UCLA administration)

First-place regional winners will move on to the next round of judging on the national level. Winners will be announced in late April.
