For years, the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center has been consistently ranked as one of the premier hospitals in the nation.

This year it received an even higher ranking closer to home.

U.S. News & World Report named the medical center the No. 1 hospital out of 138 in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, based on expertise in various specialties.

The new “Best Regional Hospitals” is an expansion of the popular nationwide “Best Hospitals” rankings. U.S. News compiled data from hundreds of hospitals in the nation’s metropolitan areas of at least 1 million people and narrowed the list down to 622 top medical centers.

In the new list, hospitals that received national rankings in at least one of the 16 specialities were ranked above those in the same region that did not rank in the national list of best hospitals.

These additional centers were added because of a “strong record of high performance … in one or more specialties,” according to the U.S. News Best Regional Hospitals website.

However, U.S. News cautioned consumers to not simply look at the overall rankings, but also at each hospital’s expertise in individual specialties.

The medical center currently has national standing in 15 of the 16 specialties considered, which include diabetes and endocrinology, cancer and orthopedics.

“I think we are doing reasonably well. We spend a lot of effort and time to take care of diabetics in the hospital,” said Dr. Stanley Korenman, professor of medicine, endocrinology, diabetes and hypertension. “We’re No. 3 to 5 in the country, and we’ve been that way for years and years. We are very proud of the rankings.”

However, he added that there is still room for improvement regardless of rank.

“I think there are also things we could do better; diabetes care in the hospital is not perfect,” Korenman said.

The Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center, another branch of the UCLA Medical System, ranked fifth in the L.A. metropolitan area.

Santa Monica’s facility focuses more on community care in areas such as general pediatrics and geriatrics, but is also nationally ranked in orthopedics and neurology and neurosurgery.

Posie Carpenter, chief administrative officer of the Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center, said the high ranking was proof of the center’s shift from a community hospital to a “small academic center.”

“The UCLA brand is highly recognizable, and this is just another seal of approval,” Carpenter said. “The health care consumer can have confidence in their physician’s training.”
