Ducks get plucked by UCLA women's basketball's high-pressure offense in 75-48 romp

If the Oregon Ducks had any doubt that the UCLA women’s basketball team was a defensive powerhouse, the uncertainty quickly dissipated Thursday night.

In the nationally televised meeting between the two teams in mid-January, Nikki Caldwell’s Bruin squad scored 33 points off of 31 Duck turnovers to win by 30.

It would prove to be the same story for UCLA in its 75-48 victory over Oregon Thursday night, even when playing on the road in the shady woods of Matthew Knight Arena.

UCLA forced numerous Oregon mistakes and turned them into baskets, using a 15-0 run early in the first half to assert its dominance over the Ducks once again.

The Ducks began the game leading 13-9 but then turned the ball over three times in a 35-second span, quickly allowing the Bruins to take a 24-13 advantage that they would not relinquish.

“I thought we gave up too many points in each (beginning) four-minute segment but from that point on, our defense really started to click in and dial in,” Caldwell said.
