Augustus Hawkins, the first black congressman from California, meets with Lyndon Johnson in 1963. His legislative fight for equality was partially motivated by racist comments he heard from those who mistakenly believed he was white because of his light skin. Hawkins was in public service for more than 50 years and passed away Nov. 10.
