Commencement speakers across the University of California have decided to not speak at this year’s graduations to show solidarity to University employees who held wage strikes earlier this month. As of now, U.S. Senator for California Kamala Harris pulled out of UC Berkeley’s commencement, U.S. Congressman for California Ted Lieu pulled out of UCLA Law’s commencement and actor Mayim Bialik pulled out of UCLA’s commencement. What are your thoughts about this?
Commencement speakers are right to not speak at the UC’s commencements, as pulling out sends a message to the University about the importance of employees’ livelihoods.
Commencements speakers are not right to pull out because it unnecessarily slights graduating students.
Pulling out of giving commencement speeches does little to help UC employees’ causes and is little more than a publicity stunt.
I have feelings about this that are not expressed in the options above.
