Bubbles bursting

Posted March 6, 2007

Bubble teams must be crying themselves sleep tonight as another precious at-large spot was taken away by an upset in the Horizon league.

Butler dropped the title game to Wright St. 60-55. The Bulldogs, on the strength of their earlier nonconference work, are assuredly safely in the field of 65. So who has the most to worry? Probably the mid-majors on the bubble, namely Missouri St., Old Dominion, UMass and Drexel.

- Oakland dribbled away an 11-point lead at halftime to give Oral Roberts the Mid-Con's auto bid. Oral Roberts won 71-67 and will not be a cupcake for a high-major that faces them in the tournament. The Golden Eagles beat Kansas in November and Seton Hall in December. Both games were on the road, so this team won't be intimidated when the brackets come out.

- North Texas beat Arkansas St. 83-75 to take the Sun Belt.

- Arron Afflalo was named by ESPN a first-team All-American and Pac-10 Player of the Year. They are well-deserved honors for Arron, and I believe he's 95% gone to the NBA although everybody at UCLA is wishing and hoping he comes back.

If he comes back next season, the sky is the limit for the potential of that team, as there are no seniors currently on the roster and Kevin Love will join the team. Love alone will allow Arron to average 20+ ppg because of the extra open looks he'll get from three and the beautiful outlet passes the big center throws to ignite the transition game. Still, all you Bruins better enjoy Arron's intensity and heart for the next few weeks. It might be the last time you'll see him in a UCLA uniform.
