UNC Wins ACC

Posted March 4, 2007

Tyler Hansborough picked himself up off the floor, blood pouring from his nose and chin. Just another UNC-Duke rivalry game. While Gerald Henderson's elbow might have felled Hansborough, "Psycho T" led the Heels to an 86-72 win over their hated rivals.

In all reality the foul looked way worse than it was, and I thought Henderson was going for the ball but got a little out of control. Now Duke will enter the ACC Tournament without him as the #7 seed. UNC clinched the top seed and a piece of the regular-season title with Virginia as Virginia Tech fell to Clemson to fall into a tie for third.

Duke has been severely overranked by the polls all year, and offense has been the main issue with the team. Now Henderson had finally started to score some points, and he gets suspended for the next game. The Devils will likely get their lowest seed in years, but still expect to be a top-6 seed due to their strong RPI and SOS, but I don't think they'll last very long in the NCAAs.

In other action:

Creighton 67, Southern Illinois 61: The Bluejays win Arch Madness (the Missouri Valley Conference Tourney), but the Salukis will get the higher seed (my guess is a No. 4).

George Mason 79, Old Dominion 63: I wrote a column a couple weeks ago about the hard times the Patriots had fallen on this season. Well, Jim Larranaga has his squad back in the Colonial finals by beating ODU. If they can make it back to the tourney, thousands of fans will get the chance to sing along with the Mason band as they play Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer." Hearing thousands of people randomly singing along to a Bon Jovi song at the RCA Dome at the Final Four last year was...weird. But in a good way. Sort of. ODU probably just had their bubble burst.

Mississippi St. 91, Alabama 67: What a disappointment the Tide has been all season. It started with the horrible tragedies suffered by senior Jamareo Davidson. That coupled with the season-long injuries for point guard Ronald Steele derailed a team that was once considered a darkhouse Final Four team. It would have been nice to see what this team could have done if it were healthy and free of adversity all year. Instead, they'll probably be headed to the NIT. And to illustrate how poor the SEC West is this year, MSU has won the division (along with Ole Miss) and is a huge longshot to get an at-large bid. All those whispers you hear about the SEC being a great conference? It is in football, but it is woefully soft in basketball.
