It is all too often that when actors try their hands at being
musicians, the results are disastrous. But some actors manage to
make the switch smoothly, as in the case of Juliette Lewis,
frontwoman of Juliette and the Licks.
UCLA is the home of Royce Hall, one of the leading performing
arts venues on the West Coast. UCLA Live, the campus performing
arts program, has brought acts ranging from Mikhail Baryshnikov to
Michael Moore, Yoko Ono to George Clinton and the Parliament
Funkadelic to UCLA.
When Indie 103.1 came on the air a few months ago, it was met
with mixed reactions.
One of the more favorable reactions that people had was
delighting in the fact that there would finally be a station that
wouldn’t have Nickelback and Creed in its rotation, in favor
of bands like The Von Bondies and Modest Mouse.
With this year’s Plea for Peace tour ““ founded by
singer/songwriter Mike Park in 2000 ““ bands like Cursive,
Decahedron, Darkest Hour, Saul Williams, EE, Planes Mistaken for
Stars, as well as Park will be performing to bring people together
for a political cause.
MTV would like to project that every concert tour is completed
with a huge bus, four-star hotels, and arenas filled with
hysterical fans. But what about the smaller, struggling bands that
tour just as much as the big guys, sans the bus, the hotel, and
well, maybe even the plethora of fans?

Regardless of relying on every pop-punk convention ever
conceived, Sugarcult’s new album, “Palm Trees and Power
Lines,” might bring some needed credibility back to a genre
that has been hijacked by tattooed boy bands and MTV in the past
few years.
Hardcore music has been a male-dominated scene since its
inception in the early ’80s, but Candace Kucsulain, 23,
vocalist of Detroit thrashers Walls of Jericho, isn’t going
to let that get in her way.
Imitation is said to be the most sincere form of flattery. But
in the arena of cover songs, imitation can be a source of
annoyance.
This feeling becomes magnified when the cover sounds similar to
the original and dominates the radio airwaves.
