Poets’ bond paves the way for sharing experiences as people of color

Some friends finish each other’s sentences, but Alberto Loaiza and Kevin Yang finish lines of each other’s poetry. Loaiza, a fourth-year English and Chicana/o studies student, and Yang, a third-year world arts and cultures and African American studies student, are two of four members of UCLA’s slam poetry team and staff members for The Word on Wednesday, the Cultural Affairs Commission’s open-mic poetry group. Despite experiencing Islamophobia, fourth-year anthropology student Damali Stennette wears a hijab because, like her race and gender, it is an integral part of her identity. Muslim students to unveil truth behind stigmas at the Hijab Monologues

Damali Stennette was wearing her hijab when a Christian preacher singled her out from the Bruin Walk crowd. The preacher said, “You are evil, and everything that will come out of your womb is evil because you are Muslim.” Stennette, a fourth-year anthropology student, said she chooses to continue wearing the hijab despite occasional harassment because Islam, like her race and gender, is an integral part of her identity. Spring Sing through the years

1945: The beginnings of Spring Sing The first Spring Sing was held on May 18, 1945, at the now-demolished UCLA Greek theatre. Created by then-ASUCLA director William Ackerman, the competition was advertised as a showcase for “Top Bruin Vocal Talent” and featured singing groups made of UCLA students. Read more...
