The UCLA men’s basketball team announced Tuesday that
point guard Jordan Farmar will not be playing in this Friday
night’s game against Canada’s Carleton University.

Farmar, who has been held out of practice for five days, was
re-evaluated Tuesday. Although he has shown significant
improvement, he will not practice or play the rest of the week.

“Obviously the rash of injuries has been frustrating for
the players involved and our team (as a whole),” coach Ben
Howland said. “But, as I’ve said before, if we had to
have injuries, better now than in mid-December when we open the
conference.”

Also not participating in the game are centers Alfred Aboya and
Michael Fey. Fey, who was diagnosed with a severe groin strain, has
been rehabbing and is looking to be ready in time for
regular-season play.

A game-time decision for Friday’s game will be shooting
guard Arron Afflalo, who has not practiced all week, and will not
practice Wednesday. He suffered a left quadricep contusion at
Saturday’s practice.

However, Howland has not been swayed by the various injuries to
his top players.

“The fact that some players will not open the season will
give significant playing time and experience to others, which
should pay off down the road,” Howland said.

“By Dec. 1, we hope that all our players, with the
exception of Josh Shipp, will be participating in practice as our
team moves forward to becoming full-strength.”
