Opera review: ‘The Tales of Hoffmann’

A lovesick poet, a goddess disguised as a man and a slew of drunken students walk into a tavern. So begins Los Angeles Opera’s current production of Jacques Offenbach’s “The Tales of Hoffmann,” the story of an oft-inebriated writer named Hoffmann (Vittorio Grigolo) recounting his failed experiences with three past lovers before realizing that his true love is for his art. Cuts to federal budget could jeopardize UCLA’s arts programs

President Donald Trump’s potential budget cuts may take a toll on the UCLA arts community, directors and faculty said. The Hill reported Jan. 19 that the Trump transition team outlined a budget plan that would eliminate the National Endowment for the Humanities and National Endowment for the Arts, the latter of which is the only funder of arts programs nationwide. Hammer Museum releases details of expansion plan

The Hammer Museum announced details of its upcoming expansion, which will increase exhibition space 60 percent by 2020, in a press release Thursday. The proposed renovations, spearheaded by architect Michael Maltzan, began in September 2016 with remodeling the museum’s third floor galleries. Read more...

The Music Industry Committee at UCLA’s office hours aren’t held by professors – instead, they’re led by chart-topping musicians.
