Former Long Story Short co-host and Daily Bruin Radio staff reporter Christyana Cabal fills in for Samantha Abraham this week for a show filled with zoo animal puns and student stories at Bruin Day.
In 1987, the Broadway musical Les Miserables garnered eight Tony awards. 25 years later, the film version of Les Miserables has been nominated for eight academy awards, including best picture.
This week, Dr. David Baron from the UCLA Ashe Center talks about the influenza virus and why students should get vaccinated. Also, theater and vocal performance students discuss nuances of the cinematography, acting, and musical soundtrack of the movie ‘Les Miserables,’ while first-year vocal performance student Dominic Delzompo second year English student Jade Hage perform songs from the musical.
During the month of November, writers nationwide set a goal of penning a 50,000-word novel in 30 days. A group of participating UCLA students host weekly “write-ins” at the Young Research Library, a time for encouragement, support, and writing. Last Thursday, Christyana sat in once more with second-year economics student Mary Haithcoat, third-year economics student Richard Sambasivam, fourth-year bioengineering student Aubrey Young, second-year English student Dmitry Neronov, and Dartmouth alumna, Kelly Pasich. With only 26 hours left to complete their next potential bestsellers, NaNoWriMo participants race to the finish line.
At UCLA’s American Indian Studies Center, Christyana spoke with academic coordinator Clementine Bordeaux from the Lakota Tribe and American Indian Studies graduate student Elisabeth Fasthorse from the Rincon Tribe. They share some of their thoughts and feelings about the representation of American Indians during the Thanksgiving season.

November holds many traditions – Election Day, Veterans Day, Turkey Day – but did you know that November is also National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo for short)? Starting at midnight on November 1, writers across the nation have 30 days to write a 50,000 word novel. Long Story Short host Christyana Cabal sat in on a “write-in” for NaNoWriMo participants at UCLA. During write-in’s, writers type up their stories, share ideas, and engage in “word wars,” or challenges to see who can write the most words in 30 minutes.

May 21, 2012 ““ In the spirit of Taiwanese American Heritage Week, Bruins for Taiwan hosted a workshop titled “Tea 101 and Tea Ritual.” The presentation included taste samples of green tea, pouchong tea, amber oolong and black tea, along with an explanation of how these play a role in the Taiwanese culture. Yet, as a new social change group on campus, the club’s main cup of tea is raising awareness for Taiwan’s struggle for recognition as an independent country. Founder of the club, Ginny Wu, a second-year economics student, and Vice President Robin Lee, a second-year global studies student, share with us the experiences they’ve faced with their Taiwanese American heritage, and how Bruins for Taiwan plans to respond.
