For UCLA softball, it was a season that started with high hopes, yet ended like the two previous.
The Bruins advanced to the College World Series in Oklahoma City, one of their goals of the season.
Ali Aguilar stepped to the plate to lead off the sixth inning for the Washington Huskies. The game was scoreless.
Moments later, a softball off Aguilar’s bat landed 273 feet away from home plate, giving Washington a 1-0 advantage over UCLA.
The Bruins have made it through regionals.
No. 5-seeded UCLA softball took down San Jose State 10-2 in six innings Saturday and proceeded to take down unseeded Cal State Fullerton 9-1 on Sunday.
The Bruins started off their postseason with a victory on a no-hitter from Rachel Garcia on Friday night.
The redshirt freshman threw all five innings of the game – shortened by the mercy rule – as UCLA softball bested Lehigh by a score of 8-0.
UCLA softball celebrated seniors shortstop Delaney Spaulding, outfielder Gabrielle Maurice and pitcher Paige McDuffee this past weekend during senior weekend.
They did it both with a ceremony and with winning a pivotal series against Arizona, building on the successes of previous weeks and putting themselves in a better position for a higher postseason seed.
Pac-12 play is winding down for UCLA softball, but the Bruins are the most confident they’ve been all season long.
“(Our confidence is) really good. It’s really high,” said senior outfielder Gabrielle Maurice.
UCLA softball coach Kelly Inouye-Perez didn’t sugarcoat the difficulties of playing a midweek game.
“I think midweeks are always a challenge,” Inouye-Perez said. “It’s actually not always a great thing.

And when all the innings were added up from this weekend’s series against California, the result was a sweep.
