Metro’s Purple Line Extension to begin construction ahead of schedule

Professor Mark Sawyer remembered for mentorship, self-expression

Mark Sawyer spoke Spanish with a Cuban accent, despite growing up in the United States. While leading study abroad programs in San Juan, Puerto Rico, locals would call him “El Cubano.” Sawyer, a political science and African American studies professor known for his work on race relations in Cuba, died March 26 in Los Angeles.
