Rio recap: Aug. 17

This year, at the 2016 Summer Olympics, 36 past, current and future UCLA athletes will compete in Rio de Janeiro. Each day, the Daily Bruin will wrap up the different events with Bruin highlights, key performances and upcoming events.
Women’s golf
Mariajo Uribe (Colombia), Giulia Sergas (Italy)
UCLA women’s golf alumnae Mariajo Uribe and Giulia Sergas got off to a mixed start in the first round of the women’s individual stroke play competition. Colombia’s Uribe shot a -1 (70), including six birdies, but a couple of double bogeys on the third and 12th holes kept her from placing among the leaders. Uribe is tied for 19th in the field of 60, five shots behind the leader, Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn. Sergas, on the other hand, struggled to an opening round of +6 (77). The Italian was unable to overcome four straight bogeys midway through her day and finished tied for 51st. Uribe’s and Sergas’ second round will begin Thursday.

Women’s water polo
USA vs. Hungary
The United States has been known to score over 10 goals a match during their tenure at the 2016 Olympics. But something new happened against Hungary – the opposing team punched back.
Team USA was able to notch another victory with a 14-10 win but there was a distinct difference in the air because most other teams were only able to put up minimal scoring against the United States.
UCLA was well represented with incoming freshman Maddie Musselman and alumni KK Clark, Rachel Fattal, Sami Hill, Courtney Mathewson and coach Adam Krikorian all on the US national team. Fattal and Mathewson both had one goal apiece while Musselman scored twice. Clark and Hill did not score, but Clark was able to notch a steal.

Men’s volleyball
USA vs. Poland
Current UCLA coach and alumnus John Speraw and company have advanced in the Olympic volleyball bracket as they defeated Poland in straight sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-20).
The plethora of UCLA-affiliated coaches have turned this young Team USA squad around. After losing some of their earliest matches, Team USA has gone on to win four in a row.
Veteran Matt Anderson had a solid match with nine kills off of 17 attempts. But it was really Aaron Russell who came in big for the United States.
Russell had 12 kills on 25 attempts, two blocks and a service ace.
