Bayard Rustin is an often-overlooked figure in the civil rights movement. Rustin was an openly gay pacifist who almost single-handedly organized the March on Washington. He was a close personal friend of Martin Luther King Jr., but King cut off ties to Rustin when others attempted to derail the movement by circulating rumors that the two were involved in a relationship.
