SAN FRANCISCO — A University of California Board of Regents committee granted autonomy to the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music in a unanimous vote Wednesday morning, making it a separate entity from the School of the Arts and Architecture.

The Regents Committee on Educational Policy approved the proposal. Under the proposal, the pre-existing departments of ethnomusicology, music and musicology will be transferred to the new school. The full UC Board of Regents will vote on the proposal tomorrow.

The proposal was initially approved by the UCLA Academic Senate’s Legislative Assembly in June. The independent school of music will be the first of its kind in the UC.

Regents Sherry Lansing and Norman Pattiz spoke in support of establishing the school before the vote.
