Men’s golf to take on nation’s best at U.S. Collegiate Championship

Five Bruin golfers will play their third tournament of the season in Alpharetta, Ga. this weekend.

Seniors Jonathan Garrick and Jake Knapp, sophomore Brandon Mai and freshmen Patrick Murphy and Cole Madey will compete in the U.S. Collegiate Championship at the Lakeside Course. No. 22 UCLA will be paired with No. 3 Auburn and No. 25 Virginia in the first round of the 17-team tournament.

The Bruins have participated in the U.S Collegiate Championship every year since 2007, winning the championship in 2011 and finishing fifth in each of the past two seasons. Garrick, UCLA’s top scorer, has competed three times, posting his best performance last year with an eighth-place finish.

One of twelve top-25 teams in the draw, including four of the top five teams, the Bruins enter with a pair of consecutive third-place finishes – at Northern Intercollegiate and Erin Hills Intercollegiate.

UCLA shot 7-under-par at Erin Hills after a 22-over par score at Northern but will likely have to improve to compete with the talented field at this weekend’s tournament.

Mai will start off the Bruins with an 8:30 a.m. tee off, followed by Murphy, Madey, Knapp and Garrick, respectively.
