The No. 5 UCLA women’s golf team recovered from an early second round deficit in the ANNIKA Intercollegiate tournament to place sixth overall in its season opener.

The team of five Bruins competed in the tournament this week at the Reunion Resort Watson Course in Orlando, Fla.

While freshmen Bethany Wu and Lilia Vu were both steady to start to the tournament, the veterans – sophomore Lydia Choi, junior Bronte Law and senior Louise Ridderstrom – had a rough start.

Wu and Vu posted scores of 3-under par and 2-under par respectively on Sunday at their first collegiate event, with a help of multiple birdies early on. While they struggled slightly in the second round, the freshmen both hung on to make the cut for top-25 on the leaderboard – 21st and 17th respectively.

As a team, however, UCLA fell two places, dropping to eighth with a combined score of two-over par.

On the final day of the tournament, the Bruins recovered behind contributions from the whole team to jump into sixth place, with five much-needed birdies from Law and two from Choi. Law, especially, shined on the final day of the tournament, shooting five-under to bring her overall score to two-under.

UCLA will continue its fall play in the Stanford Intercollegiate Oct. 18-20.
