UCLA lost one contest Tuesday night when women’s tennis succumbed to Vanderbilt in the national title match, but also won another: the annual BMW Crosstown Cup competition.

The Cup is a year-long competition between UCLA and USC in which wins by one school over the other generate points for an overall tally. After the Trojans fell in the women’s tennis NCAA semifinals, dispelling all chance of a matchup with the Bruins in the title match, UCLA clinched the Crosstown Cup with a score of 95-85.

“Achieving head-to-head excellence over our crosstown rival is what this friendly yet competitive endeavor is all about,” said UCLA Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero in a press release.

While USC could face UCLA in the baseball postseason, presenting a potential 90-90 tie, the Bruins own the tie-breaker and therefore would maintain possession of the Cup even with a loss.

The Cup first came into being in the 2001-2002 season. UCLA claimed the title in two of the past three seasons. BMW officials will present the award at an upcoming on-campus event.
