Five members of UCLA women’s tennis competed Wednesday in the first round of the NCAA individual championship bracket.

A day after the Bruins lost the national title to the Vanderbilt Commondors, sophomore Jennifer Brady, senior Robin Anderson, junior Catherine Harrison and senior Chanelle Van Nguyen overcame their opponents to advance to Thursday’s second round.

Kyle McPhillips fell in a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Florida’s Josie Kuhlman, but will compete in the doubles championship with Harrison.

Anderson defeated Virginia’s Stephanie Nauta by a score of 6-1, 6-3 while Brady beat Florida’s Brooke Austin 7-6(3), 6-3. Harrison also won 6-4, 6-3, over Virginia Tech’s Francesca Fusinato in addition to Van Nguyen’s 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-0 win against South Carolina’s Elixane Lechemia.

Anderson is the No. 1-ranked singles player in the country. Her dominant 6-4, 6-1 victory over Vanderbilt’s Sydney Campbell pulled UCLA within one point in Tuesday night’s national championship, but it wasn’t enough for her team to defend its title.
