As UCLA students wrapped up their spring breaks this past weekend, the Bruin track and field athletes participated in their second meet of the outdoor season at the Arizona State Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Invitational. Six UCLA athletes won their individual events at the ASU campus in Tempe, Ariz.

Two of these members, redshirt seniors Derek Eager and senior Zibby Boyer, obtained their second straight wins for the outdoor season. Eager won the javelin throw with a mark of 211-8 feet, while Boyer took the high jump with a jump of 5.74 feet. Boyer is continuing to perform at a high level this year after coming off a personal best of 6 feet during the indoor season. For Eager, the start of the season has been all about rhythm.

“I was hoping to build off of my first meet with (Washington State) and get into a rhythm of competing this year,” Eager said.

Eager’s goals for the year include obtaining a new personal best and being an All-American. He also commented on the success of some of his teammates.

“I want to give a shoutout to our sprinters this weekend for burning up the track,” Eager said. “(Freshman Leon) Powell and (sophomore) Darnell Roberson killed it in the 100.”

Powell won the 100 meters with a time of 10.43 and Roberson placed seventh with a time of 10.89.

Other notable Bruins this weekend were reigning Pac-12 shot put champion and Daily Bruin writer redshirt junior Nicholas Scarvelis, who won the event by tying his personal best of 64-4.50. UCLA also claimed first place in both the men’s and women’s 5,000 meters, with redshirt junior Lane Werley running 14:04.51 for the men’s side and senior Bronte Golick hitting 16:34.64 for the women’s side.

The Bruins will now host the Legends Invitational, their third outdoor meet of the year, at Drake Stadium this weekend. Events start at noon on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
