USAC recap – Feb. 17

By Jillian Frankel

Feb. 18, 2015 3:59 p.m.

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government representing the undergraduate student body at UCLA. Council meetings take place every week on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students. Watch a live stream of the meeting on the USAC Live! Youtube Channel.

Agenda

  • Councilmembers unanimously approved the Constitutional Review Committee’s revised election code, which sets campaign spending caps, requires candidates to disclose their funding sources and officially recognizes slates. The changes also detail the vote-counting procedure and roles for each member of the Election Board and specify the hours for voting, which must span 72 consecutive hours.
  • Councilmembers voted 12-1-0 to approve the election calendar for spring quarter, which determined that voting will begin on Monday, April 27 at 2 p.m. and end on Friday, May 1 at 3 p.m. Transfer Representative Negeen Sadeghi-Movahed opposed the calendar.
  • The council unanimously approved capital contingency fund allocations.

There were no officer reports at the meeting. However, Sadeghi-Movahed and General Representative 3 Fabienne Roth apologized during good and welfare for their comments about a Jewish student’s appointment at last Tuesday’s meeting. Members of Hillel said Sadeghi-Movahed and Roth, as well as General Representative 1 Manjot Singh, General Representative 2 Sofia Moreno Haq and a proxy representative for External Vice President Conrad Contreras, used anti-Semitic language and protested the appointment on the grounds of the candidate’s religion.
