UCLA economics department disestablishes computing specialization

The UCLA Department of Economics finalized the disestablishment of its computing specialization program on Wednesday.
Department faculty voted to stop accepting students to the specialization during spring quarter last year, said Ichiro Obara, undergraduate vice chair of the economics department.
Obara said faculty members decided to close the specialization because they thought the content taught in the required Program in Computing classes did not match the material they wanted their students to learn.
“PIC classes teach programming languages such as Java, while we want our students to learn programs that will be more helpful with economics analysis, such as Stata,” Obara said.
Only economics or business economics students who have successfully completed either the Math 61 course or a Program in Computing course by fall 2014 may continue to pursue the specialization. Once they have enrolled in the economics or business economics major and have completed both PIC 10A and PIC 10B, they may add the specialization.
