UC signs agreement with Mexican energy officials to further collaborations

The University of California signed an agreement Thursday with the Mexican Secretariat of Energy, or SENER to increase collaboration on research related to sustainability issues.
“This is just the beginning of a collaboration that will benefit California and Mexico,” UC President Janet Napolitano said in a press release Thursday.
The memorandum of understanding is part of a broader initiative between the UC and the Mexican government and universities that Napolitano launched in January, said UC spokeswoman Brooke Converse. In May, Napolitano signed a memorandum of understanding with the Mexican National Council of Science and Technology that strengthened research partnerships between the UC and Mexican universities.
Leonardo Beltrán, the deputy secretary of energy for SENER, said in a press release that he hopes this will lead to more collaboration between both parties in areas such as climate change.
The University and SENER also announced Thursday a program to support Mexican postdoctoral researchers at UC campuses. Under the program, the UC will support three Mexican researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory starting in January.
