UCLA to dedicate $15M for energy sustainability projects

UCLA plans to create a $15 million fund dedicated to sustainable energy projects, officials announced Tuesday.

The fund comes in addition to past contributions to sustainability efforts made by UCLA, now totaling $35 million.

As a campus with several sustainable programs already, UCLA continues to promote energy-efficient projects, including sensors that shut off lights when not in use, solar panels and updated ventilation systems. Recently, UCLA also joined the Billion Dollar Green Challenge, which pushes for major institutions to invest in projects that could reduce their energy consumption.

As the 46th institution to join the Billion Dollar Green Challenge, UCLA plans to reduce both energy expenses and harmful pollutants on campus.

Nurit Katz, the chief sustainability officer at UCLA, said in a press release that she thinks the savings made by this fund will help finance other projects in the future.
