It was an auspicious start for the UCLA swim team.

The Bruins began their season Friday by winning their first eight races in a dual meet with Washington State, finishing with a 143-104 win.

Overall, the Bruins won 11 of the 14 events at Spieker Aquatics Center, with junior Katie Kinnear and junior Arlyn Upshaw both winning two individual events. Kinnear placed first in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard fly, and Upshaw won the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard individual medley.

UCLA started off with a team win in the 200-yard medley relay, in which the group consisting of Kinnear, junior Allison Wine, sophomore Linnea Mack and senior Monica Dornick finished with a UCLA vs. WSU meet record of 1:41.66.

In four of the 11 Bruin victories, UCLA took the top-two spots, including a top-three, blue-and-gold finish in the 100-yard freestyle.

The three races that WSU won were the 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard freestyle relay, in which the Cougars finished with three relay teams in the top three.

UCLA’s next meet will be at UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 25. The Bruins won’t return to the Spieker Aquatics Center until Nov. 14 to meet Arizona.
