UCLA men’s golf places first at Erin Hills Intercollegiate

The Bruins got off to a good start on Sunday at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate in Erin, Wis.

Junior Lorens Chan and redshirt senior Manav Shah led the way for the Bruins, as both were tied for second place in individual scores after the tournament.

In the opening round, Chan finished with a score of 70 or two-under par. He struggled in the front nine but eventually pulled through in the back nine with four birdies.

Chan’s second round was not as solid, as he finished with a score of 74 or two-over par.

Chan would rebound in the last round by scoring four birdies and finishing with a score of 69 or three-under par.

Shah got off to a slow start in the first two rounds, finishing even with a score of 72 on both days.

Shah could not break even on the first two days, but he finally broke through with a much improved performance on the third day.

A strong performance in the back nine and a total of five birdies throughout the round gave Shah a score of 69 or three-under par to help keep the Bruins in first place.

Another notable performance was that of junior Jonathan Garrick.

He struggled on the first two days, with scores of 76 or four-over par on each day.

Garrick, however, ended the third round as the Bruin’s top scorer for that round, finishing with a score of 66 or six-under par.

The golfer’s first two days consisted of eight bogeys, two double bogeys and just four birdies. But he was able to make up for his earlier performances by yielding six birdies, an eagle and just two bogeys.

The team finished in first place, with a score of 859 or five-under par for the tournament. It finished twelve strokes ahead of second-place Southern Methodist University.

The men’s team will continue its season on Oct. 17 at the U.S. Collegiate Championship.
