University police officers arrested a Los Angeles man Monday after he allegedly stole a bike from a rack near the Terasaki Life Sciences Building.

Police arrested Eric Rendon Garcia, 19, at about 6:20 p.m. Monday after a passerby called police. The passerby told police she saw Garcia use bolt cutters to cut the bike lock, remove the bike and ride off.

Officers arrested Garcia near the corner of Hilgard Avenue and Wyton Drive, and retrieved the bike, said UCPD Lt. Mark Littlestone in an email statement.

Police recommend students use heavy-duty U locks to secure their bikes because people can break chain and cable locks relatively easily.

Garcia, who is not affiliated with UCLA, was booked at the Men’s Central Jail downtown in lieu of $20,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
