12-inch pipe on Sunset Boulevard bursts less than a mile from UCLA

A water pipe on Sunset Boulevard burst Sunday evening less than a mile from UCLA, sending water into the street and affecting about 20 nearby homes.

Sunset Boulevard is closed between Charing Cross Road and South Mapleton Drive and is expected to reopen about 3 a.m. Monday, according to a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power tweet.

Kim Hughes, an LADWP spokeswoman, said the pipe was 12 inches in diameter. She said that water flow has since been shut down and crews are excavating the area.

Hughes said that the department will investigate if the burst is related to other pipe bursts on Sunset Boulevard, such as the July 29 burst that caused about 20 million gallons of water to flood the UCLA campus or another burst Friday that flooded West Hollywood’s Sunset Strip.
