UCLA cross country makes strides at BYU Autumn Classic

The UCLA cross country team has spent the better part of the last three weeks at its training camp at Mammoth Mountain. With two season meets behind them, the season seems to be looking uphill from here.

After a strong start to the season at the Nevada Twilight Classic, the women’s team started off the Brigham Young Autumn Classic with a fourth place finish, edging out Idaho State. The men’s team placed second at Saturday’s meet, defeating Weber State and Idaho State.

BYU claimed the men’s first spot, finishing 20 points ahead of UCLA in a tightly contested four-mile event. Sophomore redshirt Jonah Diaz led the Bruins’ effort, placing fourth just ahead of junior teammate Sergey Sushchikh.

On the women’s side, senior Bronte Golick placed 12th for the Bruins, 11 seconds ahead of freshman Veronica Yamane, who placed 18th. UCLA placed behind Minnesota, Brigham Young and Weber State.

The Bruins now return to campus, where they plan to continue their training until once again hitting the road for the Washington Invitational in Seattle on Oct. 4.
