Beat writers’ game day predictions: UCLA v. Texas
Prior to each UCLA football game, the Daily Bruin football beat writers will predict the score, and give a short reasoning behind their prediction.
To keep track of how far off each writer’s predictions are from reality, the “prediction differential” statistic shows the average difference between the writer’s predicted margin of victory and the actual margin of victory in each game.
Kevin Bowman’s score prediction:
UCLA: 35
Texas: 17
Prediction record: 2-0
Prediction differential: 17.0
The Bruins have yet to put together a complete performance from both the offense and the defense, but they finally will this week. Texas’ offense has taken a major hit from injuries and suspensions, leaving backups along the offensive line, at quarterback and at receiver. The Longhorns’ defense, particularly their front seven, could cause some problems, but in the second week of redshirt junior center Jake Brendel’s return, the offensive line should have enough cohesion to protect its quarterback and open holes for the run game.
Chris Kalra’s score prediction:
UCLA: 28
Texas: 20
Prediction record: 2-0
Prediction differential: 20.5
Through two games, UCLA has been maddeningly inconsistent, and that speaks for just about every Bruin position group. Though UCLA isn’t rolling fluidly, it catches a break with Texas potentially out six of its starters, including junior quarterback David Ash. UCLA will win, and I think it should be the Bruins’ most complete game yet, but expect Texas’ athletic defense to make it a battle.
Jordan Lee’s score prediction:
UCLA: 31
Texas: 17
Prediction record: 2-0
Prediction differential: 20.5
UCLA needs to put together a complete game prior to the start of its vicious conference schedule. It should finally get one this Saturday. The Bruins’ offense got it going a week ago, and that should continue this week, although the Longhorns’ defense could cause some problems after getting embarrassed a week ago against BYU. The UCLA defense however, was similarly torched and will face an inexperienced offense to vent its frustrations on. It won’t always be pretty, but the Bruins will get the win.
