UCLA women’s tennis claimed the school’s 111th national championship, defeating North Carolina 4-3 in the NCAA title game Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore Kyle McPhillips clinched the title, winning her third set 6-3 after a long battle at deuce.

The Bruins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after they won the doubles point and junior Robin Anderson defeated Jamie Loeb, the No. 1 singles player, in straight sets.

The Tar Heels then tied the score 2-2, as UCLA’s freshman Jennifer Brady and sophomore Catherine Harrison both lost in straight sets.

The title then came down to the final three matches, all of which went into third sets. Junior Chanelle Van Nguyen gave UCLA a 3-2 lead with her 6-3 third-set win, but junior Kaitlin Ray’s 7-5 third-set loss evened the match at three apiece.

McPhillips then sealed the championship with her win, and the Bruins finished their season with a 27-2 record.

The NCAA championship marks the second title UCLA won this year, following women’s soccer’s title win against Florida State in December.
