USAC Recap – April 22

Agenda

  • The council approved contingency programming allocations with a 10-0-1 vote.

Special Presentations

  • A student presented to the council about Ally Week, which aims to educate UCLA community members about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities and how to be an ally to them. Ally Week runs through Saturday this week.
  • Members of the USAC External Vice President office showed a video to recap some of the office’s programs and initiatives this year, including multiple actions it has taken to educate students about interest rates on loans, the California budget and affirmative action. The video also showed programs members of the External Vice President’s office have organized to advocate for increased access to higher education.

Officer Reports

  • USAC President John Joanino said his office is holding a symposium event Friday evening at the Fowler Museum in conjunction with LA2050.
  • Internal Vice President Avi Oved said his office is programming Ally Week with other campus partners.
  • External Vice President Maryssa Hall said her office is holding an event for students to meet University of California Regent Bonnie Reiss this Thursday. She also said her office was successful in encouraging students to sign postcards calling for increased federal funding for education, as part of a budget and appropriations campaign it held last week.
  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Darren Ramalho said his office is currently putting on Academic Inequity Awareness Week and will host another Appetizers with Administrators event next Wednesday. He added that there will be a town hall where students and faculty will talk about a new diversity requirement proposal Wednesday evening.
  • Student Wellness Commissioner Savannah Badalich said her office is holding a consent fair next Wednesday and is putting on Bruin Health Week this week. She also said she is working with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Campus Resource Center to create more gender inclusive restrooms on campus.
  • General Representative Sunny Singh said his office will be tabling tomorrow at an Earth Day Fair happening on the UCLA Intramural Field.
