UCLA leads Stanford 44-29 at halftime

LAS VEGAS — On Thursday night, Stanford shot No. 3 seed Arizona State out of the Pac-12 tournament. In a matter of minutes, a close contest transformed into a 79-58 blowout.

Less than 24 hours later, the Cardinal saw things from the other end. UCLA made 10 of its first 16 field goal attempts to jump out to a 24-5 lead with 12:11 to play and leads 44-29 at the half in the second of two Pac-12 tournament semifinal games.

Meanwhile, Stanford couldn’t get much to fall, shooting just 40.7 percent from the field on the half. Worse, it didn’t have many opportunities to right the deficit. UCLA took 16 shots to Stanford’s eight in the opening minutes of the ball game.

After scoring just nine points in UCLA’s 82-63 win over Oregon Thursday night, junior guard Norman Powell had seven points in just 3:48 Friday. Powell and the rest of the Bruins ran a fast-paced offense that allowed for plenty of high-percentage shots in the paint and jumpers with space to square up and shoot.

Redshirt senior forward Travis Wear started the game a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, with sophomore guard/forward Kyle Anderson turning in a 5-for-6 showing in his first 11 minutes on the floor. Wear heads into the second half with a team-high 12 points, while Anderson adds 11 and Powell has nine. Anderson also recorded six assists and five rebounds.

Stanford’s junior guard Chasson Randle leads the Cardinal with nine points, while John Gage has six.
