Women’s soccer scores first national championship, No. 110 for UCLA

The UCLA women’s soccer team won the NCAA championship after beating Florida State 1-0 in Sunday’s championship game.
Sophomore forward Kodi Lavrusky scored the game-winning goal in overtime.
The Bruins concluded their consistently dominant season by making history and winning the women’s soccer program’s first national championship, adding one more to UCLA’s grand total of now-110 national titles.
Both UCLA and Florida State entered the match seeking their first national championship.
This was UCLA’s fourth trip to the final and first since 2005 when it lost to Portland 4-0. It was Florida State’s second final, the first coming in 2007 when the Seminoles lost to USC 2-0.
During the match, the Bruins displayed an organized defense while attacking in the front. At times, the Seminoles had all 11 players on their own half.
UCLA had more opportunities to open the scoreboard, but the first half ended 0-0, a 6-2 shot advantage for the Bruins.
For the second half, the Bruins took control of the match. Offensively, the team generated more dangerous plays but could not capitalize, and the match ended scoreless.
The match headed to overtime and six minutes in, junior defender Megan Oyster found Lavrusky, who netted the goal that gave the Bruins the championship.
UCLA finished the season with a 22-1-3 record and a 21-game undefeated streak.
