UCLA fires running backs coach Steve Broussard

UCLA running backs coach Steve Broussard has been fired and will not return to the coaching staff next season, a source with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter confirmed to the Bruin on Monday.

“We appreciate the contributions Steve made to the UCLA football program the past two years and wish him much success in the future,” coach Jim Mora said in a statement Monday.

Broussard was hired by Mora in 2011 after serving two seasons as Arizona State’s wide receivers coach. From 2007-2009, he was the running backs coach and special teams coordinator at Washington State, his alma mater.

Broussard was not made available for comment Monday, but tweeted his thanks for the opportunity to come back to Los Angeles, where he attended Manual Arts High School.

“Not my will, but Gods will be done,” Broussard tweeted. “Thanks again @UCLACoachMora for the chance to come back home … #muchlove #bruinstaff.”

On Monday, several members of the UCLA coaching staff were in Oakley, Calif., for an in-home visit with running back Joe Mixon, a blue-chip 2014 running back recruit from Freedom High School.

In two seasons with Broussard at running backs coach, the Bruins landed just one running back recruit in now-freshman Craig Lee of Redlands Senior High School in Redlands, Calif.

There is no information on who will be hired as the Bruins’ next running backs coach at this time.
