New electronic bike lockers installed on Kinross Avenue

UCLA Transportation recently installed eight new electronic bike lockers near the UCLA Kinross Building in Westwood.
The lockers cost about $20,000 and are meant to encourage cycling amongst UCLA students and employees and prevent bike theft in the area, said David Karwaski, the senior associate director of events and transportation at UCLA.
Currently, 6 percent of students and more than 2 percent of employees bike to campus, totaling about 2,400 cyclist per day, he added.
“Bike thefts are an issue on many college campuses.” Karwaski said. “This is a way to support the bike community.”
The lockers on Kinross Avenue hold one bike at a time, Karwaski said. They were designed by BikeLink, a parking system for small vehicles. To use the locker, customers must purchase a BikeLink card that can be bought off of its website.
Customers must have a BikeLink card and pay 5 cents per hour to use the lockers.
UCLA Transportation hopes to encourage more students to bike to campus by providing more bike lockers in the future near areas such as Powell Library, Karwaski said.
