Alford, UNM disagree on $1 million buyout

According to a report from the Albuquerque Journal, UCLA basketball coach Steve Alford does not intend to pay his former employer, the University of New Mexico, the $1 million buyout the school is demanding.
Alford agreed to terms on a term sheet with the Lobos that was set to begin on April 1, which included a $1 million buyout if he opted out of the contract early. Since Alford accepted the UCLA job on March 30, he says that the contract does not come into play.
Listed in the contract, however, was a 30-day notice of termination requirement – while Alford left UNM on March 30, the school claims that the 30 days ended on Monday, bringing the new contract into play. In early April, UNM sent a letter to Alford stating that they demanded the $1 million to be paid in full.
Alford’s previous contract with UNM included terms for a $200,000 buyout, which Alford reportedly intends to pay.
