Forum on UCLA's holistic admissions policies postponed

A forum on UCLA’s holistic admissions policies planned for tonight has been postponed due to scheduling problems and legal concerns about the form of the discussion, according to organizers.
The forum was intended to discuss a report by UCLA law professor Richard Sander that claims that the undergraduate admissions process is illegally taking race into account. The report was released on Oct. 23 and since then has sparked campus debate and events about the admissions process, including a rally and a separate forum held in late October.
Tonight’s forum would have included Sander, admissions officers, the Daily Bruin editor in chief, faculty members and student leaders, said Undergraduate Students Association Council Academic Affairs Commissioner Kim Davis, who was organizing the event.
However, several scheduling conflicts made it difficult for student leaders to attend, Davis said.
Admissions officials declined their invitation after receiving legal advice against participating in a public debate with Sander, according to an email from Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Janina Montero.
The forum is currently being rescheduled for sometime next quarter, Davis said. In the meantime, organizers will meet with participants in order to develop a more suitable format for the event, she said.
