Playing in an environment favorable to its opponent, the No. 3 seeded UCLA women’s basketball team saw its season come to an end in an 89-75 loss to No. 11 seeded Gonzaga Monday at the McCarthey Athletic Center in Spokane, Wash.
In what was essentially a home game for the Bulldogs, the Bruins held a narrow 38-35 lead at halftime before being outscored 54-37 in the second half of the second-round matchup of the NCAA Tournament.
The duo of junior forward Kayla Standish and senior guard Courtney Vandersloot led the way for Gonzaga. Standish notched a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds, while Vandersloot put up 29 points, 17 assists, seven rebounds and five steals.
It was a monumental night for Vandersloot, who became the first player, male or female, in NCAA Division I history to record at least 2,000 points and 1,000 assists in her collegiate career.
Guard Darxia Morris, one of UCLA’s four seniors, had a team-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field. Junior forward Jasmine Dixon also chipped in with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
UCLA ends its season with an overall record of 28-5.
