UC evacuating students studying abroad in Japan

OAKLAND “”mdash; The University of California is evacuating all its Education Abroad students in Japan and suspending its programs immediately, officials announced today.

“The whens, whys and hows are still being worked out,” UC spokesman Peter King said.

The decision follows a State Department advisory against all travel to Japan. The country suffered a devastating earthquake and tsunami on Friday, and radiation fears from damaged nuclear plants have heightened in the past week.

Students preparing to leave for Education Abroad programs in Japan are being asked to re-integrate into campuses.
