UCLA women’s tennis takes care Fresno State early, ahead of upcoming home matchup against No. 9 Baylor

The warm Los Angeles weather was no comparison to the blazing hot UCLA women’s tennis team, as the No. 10 Bruins trounced Fresno State 6-1 on Wednesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center for their third straight victory and ninth consecutive home win.

The Bruins (10-4) opened the match in dominating fashion, winning all three doubles matches by a combined 24-4 score. Singles play began auspiciously as well. Like in their 6-1 win over Washington on March 5, the Bruins received a free point as the Bulldogs (3-6) defaulted on court No. 6 because of a lack of healthy players.

The Bruins took their momentum into the remaining singles matches as all five players won their first set. Junior Carling Seguso led the pack with a quick straight-set victory, marking her 13th consecutive singles win. Her match’s result was repeated shortly, as senior Andrea Remynse, sophomore Pamela Montez and freshman Courtney Dolehide all won in straight sets.

Things played out differently at the No. 1 singles court. Junior McCall Jones dropped her second set against Fresno State’s Marianne Jodoin and was unable to win the tie-breaking third set, leading to the Bruins’ only point loss.

There will not be any time to celebrate this victory, as the Bruins will put their undefeated home record on the line today against No. 9 Baylor. The Bears defeated the Bruins 4-2 earlier this season in a consolation match during the National Indoor Championships.

The Bruins struggled heavily in singles during that match, giving up four consecutive points after getting an early 2-0 lead. The last time the two teams faced each other at the L.A. Tennis Center, the Bears upset the then-No. 2 Bruins 4-3 on March 10, 2010.
