SINGLE-MINDED: Sweet songs for Valentine's

In my column this week, I wrote about my semi-autobiographical soundtrack to a relationship. Predictable, I know, but it’s Valentine’s Day. I hope you enjoy the songs and can draw on them in the future if you need to.

“To Whom It May Concern” by The Civil Wars ““ This song is about as delicate as can be. The male and female vocalists harmonize wonderfully through lyrics that sound like letters written to each other, backed by predominately acoustic guitar. The song is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

“And If My Heart Should Somehow Stop” by James Vincent McMorrow ““ Though it’s place in the soundtrack is at a sad part in the story, this song is not sad, strictly speaking. Instead, it is determined. Acoustic guitar and McMorrow’s smokey, soulful voice are the two stars of this song. Listening to this song would make any cloudy day seem a little bit brighter.

“This = Love” by The Script -““ The most energetic song on the soundtrack to be sure. In an album that is predominately about the pains of love, this song is the peak: the point at which all previous struggles become worth it. The song is infinitely catchy, as all songs by this Ireland-based band seem to be. Check it out and blast it in your room.
