USAC Recap – Oct. 26

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Agenda
“¢bull; Finance Committee Chair Isaac Rose’s contingency allocations were passed with a unanimous vote.
“¢bull; The Resolution In Support of Islamic Studies at UCLA was passed with a unanimous vote. The resolution states that USAC supports the proposal to reopen the Islamic studies program, hire two new tenured faculty members and offer undergraduate courses within the program.
“¢bull; The council discussed ways to ease financial barriers to accessing university services, including increasing student participation in university affairs.

Special Presentations
“¢bull; Representatives from the Bruin Resource Center presented their goals and services to the council. The new center aims to promote a more inclusive student body by supporting transfers, veterans, former foster youth, parenting students and AB 540 students.
“¢bull; On Campus Housing Council representative Melissa Samson explained OCHC’s structure and encouraged communication with the Hill.
“¢bull; USAC administrative alternate Debra Geller announced the university’s plan to make broad changes to the Student Conduct Code by summer 2011. The university is seeking campus input on how to make the code more student-friendly and address online ethics. Suggestions will be accepted until the end of fall quarter.

Officer Reports
“¢bull; President Jasmine Hill is working to provide discounts for student parking passes.
“¢bull; The executive board of the University of California Student Association will be meeting with UC President Mark Yudof later this week to discuss the proposed 10 percent fee increase and other priorities of the UC Board of Regents. Council members will also attend the regents’ meeting Nov. 16-18.
“¢bull; The office of External Vice President Cristopher Santos won two statewide contests for employing the greatest number of methods to register the largest number of students on campus and breaking range records. UCLA registered a total of 3,098 voters.
