The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Special Presentations

Dianne Tanjuaquio, student affairs officer for the Dean of Students, discussed the implementation of Disability History Week at UCLA. “It’s Our Story,” a mixed media project about disability history, will be on display on Bruin Walk in front of the Wooden Center on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Elyse Colgan, a recruitment director for Teach of America, talked about strengthening the relationship between Teach for America and UCLA students.

Fund Allocations

Finance Committee Chair Isaac Rose’s contingency allocations were passed with a vote of 11-0-0.

After making adjustments, the council approved the first round of Student Organizations Operation Funds with a vote of 11-0-0.

Officer Reports

Internal Vice President Stephanie Lucas and Financial Support Commissioner Rustom Birdie held a Greek funding workshop for fraternities and sororities on Oct. 6.

Lucas added that a template for a “how to” guide on operating a student organization is ready, and the guide will be released to students within the next two weeks.

External Vice President Cristopher Santos is in talks with UC officials to find out the possibility of another fee increase, which could be up to 20 percent this year.

Santos also reminded council members of the voter registration drive in Bruin Plaza on Thursday. The Rock the Vote concert will start at 7 p.m. in De Neve Plaza on Saturday.

Academic Affairs Commissioner Suza Khy is pushing a proposal to rename fees as “tuition,” an often confusing distinction in the UC system. The proposal is still awaiting approval from the Undergraduate Council and the Executive Board within the Academic Senate. Khy also announced that on Saturday, there will be free practice exams offered for graduate-level tests, such as the GRE and LSAT, at 10 a.m. in Young Hall.

President Jasmine Hill met with Robin Garrell, the past chair of the Academic Senate, and plans to meet with the new chair Ann Karagozian soon.

Agenda

ASUCLA Student Union Director Roy Champawat brought up the idea of adding a section to the USAC website to include official factual documents to clarify content published in the Daily Bruin.

USAC administrative alternate Debra Geller stated that administrative representative Berky Nelson’s wife Joan died. When Berky Nelson returns to campus, there will be an on-campus memorial for Joan Nelson, who was an associate dean of students.

The council passed a resolution regarding USAC’s vision for the year, including topics such as campus climate, academics at UCLA and diversity, among other things.

With a vote of 11-0-0, the council passed a resolution in support of National Coming Out Week and a call for a safer and more inclusive environment.
