Changing news coverage for challenging times

By Daniel Schonhaut

Sept. 19, 2010 4:04 a.m.

Since UCLA was founded in 1919, the Daily Bruin News section has been steadily turning out stories about the university and its students.

That’s roughly seven or more stories a day, five days a week, for 91 years. I suppose we’ve developed something of a system.

This year we’re excited to announce plans for changes to the system ““ all with a goal of making the news we report more interesting, timely and in-depth.

An expanded Enterprise section will offer a behind-the-scenes look at issues affecting the community. The Science & Health section will produce increased content about the university’s scientific and medical discoveries.

These sections will also work to give you more involvement in content we produce. Next week we will introduce an online feature that will allow you to submit questions you have about UCLA. You may wonder, for instance, who the highest paid faculty member is, or what would happen if you were caught in the underground tunnels. We’ll send our reporters out to find the answers.

We will keep you up-to-date with the ongoing budget crisis, cuts to faculty and majors, and the efforts of student government. We also look to have more to say about students’ everyday lives.

With over 38,000 of us, there are limitless stories to tell.

This quarter we will introduce a technology column, and more news columns will roll out in the winter. Last year’s Crimewatch feature will be printed again on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Lastly, if you’re thinking about reporting for the Bruin, I’d encourage you to fill out our application available online. UCLA is at a crossroads of development. We’ll be in the middle of whatever happens, as it happens.
